The Self-Care Lifestyle and Healthy Eating Initiative
Olayinka’s initiative looked to provide practical and affordable strategies that economically deprived mothers can adopt to make self-care and healthy eating a sustainable part of their lifestyle. The primary aim of the project’s event was to inspire lasting behavioural changes and foster healthier communities through accessible, achievable lifestyle shifts.
Why did you think your project was important to address health and wellbeing in your community?
Economically deprived mothers face unique challenges when it comes to prioritizing self-care and healthy eating. Limited resources, time constraints, and the demands of caring for a family often make it difficult to focus on personal health and well-being. However, self-care and healthy eating are not only essential for a mother’s well-being but also for her ability to care of her family.
What's something that's surprised you in this process?
Organising this event has truly opened my eyes to the real struggles faced by economically deprived mothers in incorporating accessible and sustainable self-care practices and healthy eating into their lives. Hearing their stories which I could relate with as a mother going through economic hardship is humbling and enlightening. This experience has deeply inspired me to organise more of such initiatives within our community. I am incredibly grateful to TGL for giving me the opportunity to contribute to the well-being of this important group in our society. It has been a rewarding experience to be part of something that has the potential to make a lasting impact, and I look forward to continuing this work in the future.
What change would you like to see so that more people can be empowered to make decisions on the issues that affect them?
The feedback from the participants revealed a genuine need for more events like this, which not only provide practical support but also create a safe space for these mothers to learn and grow.
